I receintly did location for a week long shoot where the DP was using the Sony 900 HD Cam.
The down convert brought in the audio at something like -30 to -40 db.
All the levels were monitored by me at -18 to -20 db (I had dat back up at same levels) and I was monitoring audio out of the Camera. The levels were fine.
My hunch is when the DP rolls color bars he is also sending a tone signal to tape. Somehow the tone signal must not have matched the audio I was sending to the camera. down convert must have used that as their ref.

The camera is only rented for the shoots and the DP gards it with his life.
So I don't have time to test much in the field.

Q1:
On the rear panel of the camera there is an audio out that is a '5' pin MXLR.
I bought a 5 pin FXLR and want to be able to send signal from the camera so I can match the signal.
Does anyone know how the 5 pin is wired??? is it 'TR',sheild,'TR'?? Or is there an adapter or does Sony have a cable I can order for this? I checked the website and have a copy of the manual but nothing about this. The DP just wants to wash his hand of the audio. I'm on my own.

Q2:
Should I not worry about audio out and just send -18 tone to the camera and instruct downconvert to use that as ref?

Thanks for help.

There is a way to turn off the internal tone generator but I believe it's a menu function.

IIRC The 5 pin xlr is wired:
1. Ground
2. Left +
3. Left -
4. Right +
5. Right -

oops forgot Q2.

Keep using your -18dbfs tone and make sure post is informed as to which tone level to use.
