Hi. I've been working in post audio in LA for the past few years and I am busy developing my chops as a sound designer/editor.

In my quest for new, original sounds for my SFX library I am considering the purchase of a 4x6 isolation/vocal booth. I do field recording, but I am looking for a super quiet, controlled enviroment for recording SFX/sonic experimentation at home. I have access to a nice large studio from time to time, but I'd love a dedicated space for noise making.

I understand that good Foley recordists often capture some of the room sound in their recordings with a an additional room mic or by micing from a distance. Is a 4x6 booth simply too small to wield good results?

I know that recording in a small space could lead to problems like wierd early reflections or an overly dead sound. Anyone recording in a space this small with good results? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Justin

I'm no expert in foley but I would think that a 4x6' space is too small to get any perspective or "air" around what you might be recording.

OTOH if a dead room sound is what you're after then it'll be fine.

My booth is only slightly larger. While I built it for v/o and ADR, it's fine for sfx.

You can always add 'room' in the mix.
