Putting together our first SFX gathering kit. We will be using Sennheiser 416 and 418s. I am unsure of whether to get a windjammer (furry), winderscreen (zeppelin) or softie? Which is more versitile? Pros and Cons?

Thanks,

Almost all professionals would get both a Zeppelin and a Windjammer. (I don' think you can use the Windjammer without a Zeppelin, anyway.)

Frank,

Use wind protection only if you need it.
Zeppelin is a must. Then add Muff or Windjammer. No need for Softie, but it's more compact. Eventually try foam-screen at very first step. Each item muffles the sound a little. 418 is very wind sensitive on the S-cap.

I once..(ore twice..) used the following: mic+foam+zep+muff+jammer.
I didn't want too much LF-cut.

I believe you will need the zep most of the time.

Have fun

soundchris,

yes, while working with zeps since 27+ years, I found out by accident that leaving the foam on the mic and put this rig into the zep, I believed that there was an improvement in wind protection. Adding muff + windjammer to that in fact makes no more sense for the foam.

But try this: put your mic into a zep. Move the zep fast around in one direction, as if you make a quick long move with a long boom. Perhaps depending on mic and/or zep model, you will hear air move inside the zep that affects your mic, a very LF sound. Try the same with foam on mic: less noise.

Of course you need to cut the foam to perfect length as it scratches at the zep front end if foam is too long.

I like to say that this is NOT my standart setup, of course!!!
