It's a great looking unit and most likely will do everything it should but it's about $15,000. If nothing else the price will prevent it from becomming as popular as the Deva from Zaxcom.

Well, i have one standing here ( sr 10 ), and indeed, it looks and feels very good :-). But what's even more important, it sounds very good. I used to Record on a Nagra D 1, and this is the first machine that can replace it, imo. You should really listen to it's Mic/line inputs and listen to it's Phase lin. behavior.
The 2 batterys keeps it alive for 12 to 15 hours, and the molded Aluminium housing is solid, very solid & makes it a machine that can stand the fine Dutch Climate ( warm, cold, wet, windy, sand )
I'm just playing with the 6 to 2 mode with the onboard fader's, see how that works :-)..
I think it will get some software updates in the first few months to be abit more comfortable to work with, but so far, so very good.
Regards, Roberto van Eijden, Amsterdam. ( only the swiveling display is already a reason to have this on the Cart  )

Hey folks,
I am a second assistent on a big movie and my boss gave me the opportunity to check out this new toy over the chrismas holidays. He is using it on the show since a couple of weeks and is very happy with it. We had one bad expierience with the HD. When it gets too cold or too dry the HD freezes and needed to be rebooted. The guys at Aaton are doing a hell of a job because two days later we recieved a new maschine which is still working fine. I can say it is really a great toy and worth its money. Very easy menu and a very solid build plus a marvelous service of the company beats the rcord.

I was able to sit down with an Aaton a couple of months ago and I was impressed with the engineering. It is a very solid piece of work.
Since I am a Deva owner, it is the only thing I can use as a reference to compare it to.
I find the Deva easier to navigate and operate. It is a bit more intuitive and the menu screen/pages are easier to go through.
And I am not sure about Aaton system of downloading. Deva has set themselves up to turn in hard drives or DVDs to post and the last I heard Aaton has a firewire out. You would have to have a laptop on set to download should your hardrive get full.
As far as the sound (the most important part) goes, in a blind test I couldn't tell you the difference between something recorded with a Aaton or a Deva. Both are solid works of engineering and you should check out both and go with what you are most comfortable with.

Hmm, this sounds all a bit strange to me..The cantar has a slot under the display were a DVD burner is/ will be. Also you can ( RTFM ) connect a burner on the FW port.
You really "'tested"' it ?

My test was a half-hour with the unit, the manual, a mic and a cable. The unit I had didn't have a DVD drive built in. I wasn't given a demo or a salesman's pitch. Glen Trew had one at his shop and invited me to drop by and check it out. Given that my time with the machine was brief and unsupervised only allows me to share my first impressions. I think it is a great piece of engineering and will probably catch on with quite a few mixers.
I did not literally do a blind test. Since both the Deva(my frame of reference) and Cantar are recording wave files at a common sample rate with similar preamps, to my (educated) ears they sound the same. I guess the point I was trying to make was that the Cantar and the Deva sound alike and the most important thing, the sonic integrity of the Cantar, cannot be questioned.
I hear that HHB's new deck is now out there and I would love to know when somebody does a comparison of it, the Cantar, the Deva, and the Fostex PD-6.

Well, since it is always handy to know what you have in your hands when you ''test'' something, at www.locationsound.com you find a nice ( and in your native language ) description of what it can do.
