I'm in the process of purchasing a field recording rig for SFX. I'm a bit concerned about carrying over $5,000 worth of gear around. Especially considering that I plan to do a lot of recording late at night--I live in LA and the late night and early morning are the only times when there isn't a ton of ambient city rumble.

The odds of getting mugged over a pair of Schoeps are probably pretty low I guess, but I know from experience that gear gets lifted from time to time here in LA.

How many of you carry insurance for your gear? Is it part of your homeowner's/rental insurance, or are there specific policies offered to cover your gear? How much do you pay a month?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

You should definitely insure your gear.

Stuff gets stolen from film shoots all the time. People know how much a Schoeps mike is worth. You MUST get insurance.

You will not be able to use a homowner's policy. If you file a claim for professional equipment that was stolen out of your car, your homeowner's policy will reject the claim.

You need to get business insurance. Policies can be extremely expensive and hard to get for the type of equipment you are talking about. I joined the musician's union solely for the purpose of getting the great policy they have through Seabury & Smith.

Thanks David.

You saved me a great deal of painful research.

I'm already a member of the AFM, I guess this is the way for me to go.
