Hi everybody!

I'm new to this forum; I'm a studio guy, but lately I've been hired for some feature film (on DV) to do production sound (and I offered to do post as well in my PT rig).

I have a couple of questions I'd like you to answer.

I'd like to get ambiences and room tone in stereo, so are there other ways other than MS technique to have a recording that'll be mono compatible ?(I'm not sure about the target of the feature, so I'd like to have everything covered, thus mono compatibility too, even if the final format will be 3.1)

In a technical briefing with the crew I noticed that the director's and assistant director's monitors have a loud 10KHz (I belive) tone; is there a way (other than asking them to change model) to get rid of that or to deal with it when in post?

Thank you for your help

L.G. :)

An option for wild atmos is to record extra-long in mono. Put different sections on the l and r channels in post, and pan and delay/verb as appropriate. This way you can keep them out of the center, to protect dialog.

Since the main purpose of room tone is to fill dialog holes, it should be recorded the same was as dialog - that is, mono (or possibly split) for just about every project.

Constant high pitched whines are fairly easy to mask or filter in post, and sometimes possible to block on the set. But if you're worried, you should be able to get them to swap for quieter monitors - or at least, keep them away from your mics.

You might want to check the contents of a couple of sound-for-video books available at my website. One of them has about a hundred pages on production audio - mic choices, boom and lav technique, wireless, interfacing with DV cams...
