have searched for previous articles.... so.. here comes the question..

for run and gun...everything here is about a location recording unit that can withstand the boom operator running around, bouncing, etc....

Nagra and Dat
if you use them, awesome, great.

Would get the Nagra and a DIFFERENT digital format if budget was larger, however it's not, so will be going with digital only for the current time.

budgeting here, do not have them, so the dilemma
is which DIFFERENT medium is the target?
Why not DAT? because can get a COMPACT FLASH unit for $500 with 512mb card and put more of the budget towards a better outboard preamp to run into the CF (Compact Flash) recorder
or can get a laptop which has many more uses as well....

Just trying to find out how many of you out there have had the opportunity, or currently are, using a medium other than DAT, and which make, model.

IE:
- Laptop(truly running with this strapped to boom-ops waist)
..............if so please state setup, what preamps used, if you went with those preamps because of $ limit or because they sound good enough in production for end result

- COMPACT FLASH or MICRODRIVE
...
only models found so far:
Fostex Mr-8
Boss BR-532
(new model coming out allegedly BR-864)
Korg PXR4
Zoom MRS4
Tascam Pocket Studio
----higher end
Mayah Flashman (unknown pricing)
----
Marantz PMD690 and pmd 680

.............................
If you are using any of the Compact Flash or other units please detail your setup and if you're 100% satisified or if you're constrained by budgeting

The budget here say is a rough 2k
could get 2 channel Apogee and Marantz unit Compact flash for that price NEW
Or could go laptop/ Sound Devices

Thank you!
