The high end manufacturers of studio outboard gear have generally avoided offering products for the portable / location recording market. (you don't see many battery powered Millennia, Manley or Avalon units) But with the rapid rise of digital products, the "good stuff" is no longer guaranteed to be loaded down with heavy weight class A circuitry and heavy iron transformers. RME Audio, a well respected German maker of A/D converters, high end soundcards, and other gear, has just released a 4 channel mic preamp known as the QuadMic. (the 8ch OctaMic is due out this fall.)

I needed to acquire an additional 2 or 4 channels of portable preamps for my location work, but I really wanted to limit the size and weight of the units. (my existing preamps are all heavy duty montsers - and they all sound great). I wanted an inexpensive multi channel preamp that was designed for location work. The RME QuadMic meets those qualifications and runs off of almost any type of power imaginable (AC, DC, battery, car adapter, etc...) The 9" x 5" x 1.5" dimensions are remarkable for a 4ch unit, as is the $560 "street" price; the list price is around $750, I think.

My first chance to use it on a job will be this Thursday; I'll follow up with some review comments. If its performance can live up to its price and size breakthroughs, I think this will be a major breakthrough. (I know that this reads like a press release from a marketing weasel, but I'm just really impressed with this thing.)
