Looking for a pair of auratones to check mixes on, etc.

I'm willing to accept a substitute, if yours cut the mustard.

8 or 16 ohm for the speakers, as they will be attached to a sony 2030 NTSC monitor, and I don't want to go searching for another small amp for these speakers.

Thanks!

What are you trying to accomplish?

The reason people use Auratone 5C cubes isn't because they're great, or even a perfect representation of what every or any viewer will hear, but because they're consistent narrow-band speakers. So producers and remixers learn to translate the Auratone sound to what'll broadcast (after, of course, doing the mix on full-range flat speakers).

So substituting another small speaker, like the Cambridge Ensemble or the RatShack Minimum 7, isn't going to give you the same kind of reference. About the only other semi-respected and consistent narrow reference speaker is the NS-10 (please don't flame me), and that's more in the music biz. And isn't being built any more.

BTW, in my experience Auratones want a reasonable amount of wattage. I'm not sure you could power them from a PVM.

It's actually to do a preemptive strike.

I was planning on using them as a lowest common denominator for my mixes, and *eventually* they would serve a greater pupose once I start working on larger projects and become more experienced. Since I've had a hell of a time tracking them down, and I'm sure it's only going to get harder to get, I would bite the bullet now and get them.

The alternatives I'm willing to entertain are simply for the first point: lowest common denominator. If I can't get the 5cs, then I'll find something else be the LCD.

Thanks for the input Jay, your advice is always appreciated.

I just got a pair from Coast Recording, here in L.A.. They are hard to get because there is only one guy who makes them, he lives in San Diego, and
I think he's in his 70's. His out put is pretty sporadic, but if your going to mix for post, you gotta have them. I know of guys who take theirs with them where ever they mix. Its all about consistency. And yes, you will need a little Stewart amp, or comperable amp to power them.
