When to use wires?

This is a general question to all sound mixers. At what point do you all decide that you ned to pull out the wires? Not including the wide and tight from camera. I guess I am referring to BG noise. Sometimes a directional mic is enough and post can eq and do their magic with the rest. But when does that point jump from Mic to definately wires. I know there is probably no easy answer, but lets hear from you, post guys as well please. Just how much noise can post get rid of? and what types?
